Position Title: Project Assistant (capacity building)
Duty Station: Sofia, Bulgaria
Classification: General Service Staff, Grade 5
Type of Appointment: 1 year fixed-term contract

Established in 1951, IOM is a Related Organization of the United Nations, and as the leading UN agency in the field of migration, works closely with governmental, intergovernmental and non-governmental partners. IOM is dedicated to promoting humane and orderly migration for the benefit of all. It does so by providing services and advice to governments and migrants.

Under the overall supervision of the IOM Bulgaria’s Head of Mission and the direct supervision of the IOM’s Bulgaria Protection and Project Development Officer, the successful candidate will be accountable and responsible for the planning, implementation and reporting of IOM capacity building activities and maintaining partnerships with key actors in the field of migration management in Bulgaria including academia, public authorities, NGOs, migrant’s communities and other relevant stakeholders.

Core Functions / Responsibilities:

  1. Coordinate IOM Bulgaria capacity building programme including trainings for representatives of national institutions and NGOs on various topics, including protection and human rights, gender-based violence, working with children, working with vulnerable groups, intercultural competence, psychosocial support, site management support, and others. 

  2. Organize the agenda and manages the logistics of capacity building events organized by IOM Bulgaria including trainings, workshops, meetings, field visits, and others. 

  3. Facilitate the cooperation and organizes working meetings with public authorities, academia, NGOs, migrant’s communities, and other stakeholders in the field of migration management in Bulgaria. 

  4. Prepare regular reports on the implementation of IOM capacity building activities and development of partnerships with key actors in Bulgaria.

  5. Propose activities and prepares recommendations on developing further IOM Bulgaria capacity building portfolio.

  6. Participate in trainings, seminars and meetings, and liaises with partner organizations, as required.

  7. Prepare ppt presentations, working materials, analyses and other documents to be used in working meetings, trainings and other capacity building events.

  8. Undertake any other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications and Experience


  • Bachelor’s degree in Political or Social Sciences, Migration Studies, or related field from an accredited academic institution with at least three years of relevant professional experience; 

  • Or, high school degree with at least five years of relevant working experience;

  • Demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Office applications;


  • Knowledge of Migration issues would be a distinct advantage;

  • Previous work experience with EU donors would be a distinct advantage; 

  • Previous work experience in international organizations and companies would be an advantage.


Fluency in English and Bulgarian is required.
