In Bulgaria, IOM is focusing on responding to the current migration situation in the country, in support of the Bulgarian Government and in cooperation with all other agencies involved.


Context: IOM Sofia is hiring additional staff for the established pool of interpreters to support the work of IOM staff to provide support to migrants taking into account their specific needs. The interpreter/s with Kurdish will support the outreach activities of the IOM teams and the certified interpreter/s with English will support the trainings, meetings; conferences and other events, organized by IOM Bulgaria.


Core Functions / Responsibilities:

  • Interpreter/s with Kurdish during outreach activities
  1. Do informal translation from Bulgarian/English to Kurdish and vice versa in coordination with IOM colleagues and as part of IOM mobile protection team(s) and/or Assisted Voluntary Return (AVR) teams;
  2. Assist the IOM mobile team(s) and translate during the screening(s) and assessment(s) of vulnerable cases among refugees, asylum seekers and migrants, including potential victims of trafficking, cases of sexual and gender-based violence, unaccompanied and separated minors, unaccompanied elderly, pregnant women, people with severe mental and physical disabilities, etc.
  3. Translate during educational, psychological support and individual counseling sessions to the identified vulnerable cases.
  4. Translate during the information sessions organized by IOM staff members and consultants.
  5. Translate information materials to be disseminated to migrants and refugee
  6. Perform other duties as required for the successful implementation of the projects.


  • Certified Interpreter/s with English for simultaneous/written translation
  1. Do simultaneous translation from Bulgarian to English and vice versa during the conferences, trainings, meetings and other events
  2. Translate informational materials, presentations, reports and other working documents. Ensure that the translation text is technically, linguistically and grammatically correct, error free and it should meet high quality standards, and would not need further editing after completion of translation
  3. Interpreter/s should be qualified and have previously participated in workshops/events. They should have good working experience in the field of translation.
  4. nterpreters shall be in venue as per time scheduled provided by IOM
  5. Perform other duties as required for the successful implementation of the projects.


Required Qualifications and Experience


Education for Interpreter/s with  Kurdish

  • Completed high school degree is required, a university degree from an accredited academic institution is an advantage.
  • Good level of computer literacy


Education for Interpreters/s with English

  • Completed University Degree in English Philology
  • Master Degree in Consecutive/Simultaneous Translation is an advantage
  • Proficiency Certificate for C2 level is required



  • Previous experience in providing interpretation services to migrants and/or refugees is an advantage.
  • Awareness of migrants issues.
  • Excellent communication and negotiation skills, personal commitment, efficiency and flexibility.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision and under difficult conditions.



Fluency in the following languages: Bulgarian and/or Kurdish and/or English.
