IOM donates two new ambulances with modern medical equipment to the Ministry of Interior’s Medical Institute

The International Organization for Migration’s Mission in Bulgaria donated at an official ceremony two new ambulances with modern medical equipment to the Ministry of the Interior’s Medical Institute.

“I warmly thank for the material and technical support provided for the needs of the Ministry of the Interior’s Medical Institute”, Minister of the Interior Mr. Mladen Marinov expressed his gratitude to IOM Bulgaria’s representatives at the official ceremony celebrating the organization’s donation. He emphasized that the donation is an expression of support on part of IOM for the efforts that the Republic of Bulgaria invests to provide appropriate healthcare conditions and genuine access to specialized medical assistance to the persons accommodated in the Special Homes for Temporary Accommodation of Foreigners. It is also an expression of the longstanding partnership between the IOM and the MoI, and provides the Medical Institute with enhanced mobility and the opportunity to quickly react as they are discharging their duty – saving human lives. Cooperation with IOM Bulgaria will continue in the spirit of partnership and dialogue, assured Minister Marinov.

Mr. Radoslav Stamenkov, Chief of Mission of the International Organization for Migration in Bulgaria emphasized that along with the gratuitous donation the organization once again confirms its commitment to be a long-term and upright partner to the government of the Republic of Bulgaria, as well as to the government’s institutions, and reaffirms its work towards safe and sustainable migration management in Bulgaria. “I find that today’s donation is important for the better and timelier response in the case of emergencies, and that not only trained professionals but also modern and high-quality equipment is of critical importance when it comes to saving human lives”, said in his speech Mr. Stamenkov. “And saving lives is the daily occupation of professionals in the field of migration and of the most part of the MoI’s employees”, he added.

Representatives of IOM, Minister Marinov, the Director of the Institute Prof Dr Nencho Smilov, the Director of the Migration Directorate Mr. Nikolay Nikolov, and the Chief of Staff of the Interior Minister Mr. Mikhail Zlatanov examined closely the ambulances and the equipment inside. Both machines are of the Volkswagen Krafter model, with a total value of over €255 000. The funding forms part of the Emergency Measures of €160 million under the Asylum, Migration and Integration Fund, granted by the European Commission to Bulgaria with a view to improved management of migration flows.
